Best Games like Roblox To Play Next

Best Games like Roblox

Roblox is all the rage– and now gamers, from kids to parents, are looking for alternatives or the best games like it.

To understand just how popular Roblox and games like it have become, it’s important to provide some context.

Ubisoft, the company that’s risen in fame with titles like Prince and Persia and Assassin’s Creed, is considered a gaming giant, with a net worth exceeding $3.6 billion. Another bright note of the gaming scene that you may have heard of is Take-Two. Despite owning just two labels– Rockstar Games and 2K– the studio has become notable and is worth over $400 million to date.

But did what if I told you that Roblox, an online free-to-play game, is now worth more than Ubisoft and Take-Two combined?

The seeming kid-friendly Roblox, with its lego-like appearance, has caught the attention of players around the world– and investors. It’s now estimated to be worth $45 billion after the game was directly listed to the public.

To be clear, a direct listing worth is not exactly equivalent to a net worth– others have cited a lower net worth, at around $38 billion, but the message is clear: Roblox, what started as perhaps an unassuming game aimed at kids, has become enormously popular, in ways many could not have predicted.

But there are some downsides- including a recent security hack, plus, potentially repetitive gameplay. In this article, I’ll tell you what you need to know about Roblox, and how to find the best games like this massively popular game.

What is Roblox?

Roblox is an online multiplayer game that’s been around for longer than you might think: it was first released back in 2006 and was relatively unknown for many years.

However, by the mid-2010’s it began to pick up popularity, and the global pandemic is thought to have accelerated that even more– leading to nearly 165 million active players by Fall 2020. Even more startling, a report in The Verge estimated that over half of American children are currently playing Roblox.

The free-to-play game offers in-game purchases– known as microtransactions. While free on its surface, free play to games offers incentives to buy content to enhance your game and unlock events as you play. In Roblox, players can buy items using in-game currency, which can also be managed through an optional subscription.

Gameplay: Why is Roblox so Fun?

Roblox is a 3D, open-world multiplayer game platform where players can interact with others, attend live events, and more. To play, you create your own avatar and save up money to buy homes and make upgrades.Much like a game like Animal Crossing, you can also purchase clothing.

In fact, though, Roblox is not limited to just this– and is not a single game, but a platform of essentially mini-games, including the bulk of it being user-generated content. In other words, you can enter and play games created by other players.

Roblox in this way is massive in scale, and can even be played not only on PC but also downloaded as an app for smartphones.

It’s nearest to a sandbox game, with unstructured gameplay and an emphasis on creativity vs competition. It likely is seen as so fun for that reason– the ability to interact with others online, the continually expanding content, and the 3D open-world for a sense of immersion.

Of course, there are downsides to Roblox, as well.

Is Roblox safe for my child?

If you happen to be a parent reading this, it’s important to address an issue of great debate right now: whether or not Roblox is safe for your child. The thing to understand is that Roblox is entirely massively multiplayer online. This means that they can play with anyone around the world.

Roblox is a great option for responsible tweens and teens, but, because it runs on user-generated content, kids may come across material that is more teen-rated. Besides, there are issues that older gamers could be using the platform.

Finally, Roblox did have a brief security breach. It was hacked in 2020. The good news is that most of the rumors about it being hacked have no backing. The only verified hacking occurred in anticipation of the presidential election, where players were greeted with a message to vote for Donald Trump for president, as reported by BBC News. Other murmurings appear to be just that– rumors spread across social media.

In short: Roblox can be a fun and even learning experience for young gamers, but if you’re concerned, it may be good to play alongside your child.

Is Roblox better than MC?

Roblox is not inherently better than Minecraft— it’s simply different. Roblox is a massively multiplayer game, with its focus on player interaction and user-generated content.

While both feature 3D open-world exploration and a deal of creativity, Minecraft is more focused on single-player modes and also has both a creative and survival mode. They do have similar graphics and some overlap in appeal, however–which is why Minecraft will be included on my list of the best games like Roblox.

Games like Roblox: My Picks

Now that you know about the hype surrounding Roblox– and some of the pros and cons of Roblox gameplay, I’ll give you my recommendations for games like Roblox. For this list, I did not stick to a strict list of features, but rather an overall appeal.

These games include a similar aesthetic, open-world experience, and creative gameplay that will appeal to kids to teens. I’ve purposely included a variety of games so you can find the best one for you.

Without further ado, here are my picks for the best games like Roblox.

Minecraft

I hardly think this game needs an introduction, but if you’ve been playing Roblox and never given Minecraft a chance, I highly recommend it. There’s a reason Minecraft is an immediate alternative to Roblox for a few reasons.

For one, the lego-like, blocky graphics immediately draw comparisons. Then there is the ability to create and explore open 3D worlds. The sandbox game, which has sold over 200 million copies and boasts 126 million active users on average per month, allows you to play in both creative and survival modes. Players are tasked with building, scavenging, and crafting tools from scratch.

I love that worlds are seemingly infinite, with procedural progression, and that there are options for some interactive gameplay, but an emphasis on single-player, which is great if you’re wary of multiplayer modes. Plus, with two different modes and endless maps you can download, Minecraft can provide hours of fun. I also like the sense of community and consistent updates.

Minecraft is available for PC, Console (Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS3, PS Vita, WiiU, and Nintendo DS), and mobile devices. Buy Here.

Slither

Slither, like Roblox, is an online multiplayer game with graphics that will likely appeal to kids. Players game as a worm, where they explore a world and attempt to grow large by consuming pellets and competing against other players. It’s a challenging game in that it requires fast reaction time– a single collision with another player can cause you to lose.

It’s not an open world, though that adds to the challenge– go too close to the border and your worm will die as well. Though seemingly simple gameplay on its surface, I like the bright graphics, the easy-to-learn play, and this is a game for fans of Roblox who want something they don’t need to invest much time to enjoy.

Interestingly, this game has garnered a following for players of all ages and perhaps was most popularized by YouTube content creators. It’s a fun game on the go–while it doesn’t have as great of replay value, Slither is a free game you can play right away. Play Here.

Mini World

If you’re looking for a game like Roblox that offers many of the same features– but with more building capabilities, and the same option for creative and survival modes that Minecraft offers– I recommend Mini World.

Mini World is a 3D, sandbox-style game that allows you to create and play the way you want. You can construct homes, apartments, cities, and even castles, with no limits to have many stories you build, or how outlandish or elaborate your designs become.

In both creative and survival mode, you can play solo or connect with other players on both PC and mobile devices. In that multiplayer setting, you can create a ‘dream squad’ with friends. Having more control for who you play with makes it a great alternative for a gamer who does enjoy Roblox, but is wary of the fully massively multiplayer element.

Mini World, as a game like Minecraft, also has a high degree of customization– which leads to the excellent replay value. Like both Minecraft and Roblox, you build using blocks and can transform the world around you, too.

Other features include a gallery, which provides mini-challenges, like puzzles and even more strategy and RPG-based games. Even better, the built-in editor allows you to create your own mini-games. Learn More Here.

Fall Guys

Fall Guys, in some ways, may seem like a bit of an outlier or wild card when it comes to games like Roblox, but I’ve included it for a few reasons. Fall Guys is a good alternative to Roblox if you were originally drawn for Roblox for its massively online multiplayer platform, and the interactive, lively community– but are looking for something a bit more fast-paced and competitive in nature.

Splashy, bright graphics add to the exciting, fast-action competitive play. Fall Guys takes multiplayer to the next level, for fun, borderline chaotic gameplay that can accommodate up to 60 players in a single region.

Described as ‘battle-royale style gameplay, players compete in mini-games and challenges of speed, obstacles, and mini combat. The goal is to survive as long as possible and make it on to subsequent levels. I also recommend this game for those who are fans of games like Super Mario Smash Brothers, and who are open to in-game currency.

The optional microtransactions include ways to buy new costumes, including costumes from well-known franchises. You can earn currencies also by winning matches. I like that it includes expansion, or new seasons, to enhance your game and keep it fresh– from an icy adventure pack to a dragon and even fast food theme.

Fall Guys can be purchased online, in bundles, and by expansion. It’s available for PC only at this time. Buy Here.

RuneScape

RuneScape is a great alternative to Roblox for anyone who wants free play, an online game that adds in some fantasy gameplay. The online multiplayer game is immersive, and also great for fans of fantasy-themed world exploration games like Skyrim. Though not nearly as in-depth or advanced, RuneScape has its own features to offer.

As one of the most frequently updated games, alongside the massively multiplayer model, role-playing elements stay fresh. The main gameplay is set in a fantasy world based in medieval times, where you can travel by walking, taking a ship, or even casting a spell.

Though starkly different than Roblox in many ways, older players of Roblox looking for something a bit more immersive may enjoy the ability to create your own character, as well as the option for a blend of competitive and more strategic gameplay.

Goals, quests, skills, and challenging other players, as well as threatening NPCs, like monsters, are all part of the experience. And true to a more sandbox nature, there is no one right way to play.

RuneScape is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and mobile devices. Download Here.

LegoWorlds

As a more close alternative to Roblox, you may want to consider LegoWorlds. LegoWorlds has much of the same aesthetic but without some of the controversy and concerns tied to the massively online multiplayer modes and user-generated content tied to Roblox.

LegoWorlds, though, is almost entirely centered on creative play, with sandbox gameplay that allows players to construct whatever they like using virtual legos. Players can also tweak their own characters’ appearances, as well as add unique touches to costumes and outfits.

I like that, in addition to terrain and world editing tools, you can even share what you’ve done. And while there is a multiplayer mode, it feels optional, making it a great balance regardless of what gameplay you’re interested in.

LegoWorlds is available for Windows, PlayStation 4 and XB0x currently has two DLC add ons. Buy Here.

For Teens & YA: Fortnite

I couldn’t leave off one of the most popular free-to-play games from this list, Fortnite I’d recommend for a teen gamer and up, though it is now even becoming popular for some younger players. This online game was first introduced to the gaming community in 2017 and made a splash with its competitive, cooperative gameplay.

This game though is a departure from some of my list and best for those who like a heavier emphasis on survival elements. Battle royale gameplay has you teaming up with other players in unique worlds and different combat arenas.

Crafting, a bit of innovation, and fast thinking make for exciting and unique gameplay. The idea is to help save the world through gathering resources, crafting weapons, teaming with others, and finding loot in the explorable world.

Fortnite is available in several different versions; Battle Royale can be played on PC and Mac, as well as PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Android and IOS mobile devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What is the most popular game on Roblox?

Answer: Roblox boasts countless mini-games, but one of the most popular games is Adopt Me!. Following the massive multiplayer online model of all Roblox games, players adopt and trade virtual pets, and raise them from birth. Many players aim to adopt more rare pets or trade for their favorite pets. Events sometimes feature characters from iconic franchises such as Scooby-Doo, and players have the option for in-game purchases, which can add up quickly.

Question: Is Roblox a ripoff of Lego?

Answer: No– Roblox is more a gaming platform, with many games, unlike games like Factorio, that consist of just one game. While Roblox may appear to share graphics similar to Lego, Roblox is also more driven by user-generated content.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need the best gaming chair or even a great setup to enjoy games like Roblox. From other kid-focused games to even more intense gameplay like Fortnite, there is a bevy of games that offer a blend of community, creativity, and connect you to other gamers around the world.
