Sims 4 Furry Mod Guide

Since Sims 4 came out in 2014, there’s been a strange divide in the community about fantasy and occult vs realistic gameplay.

And while many swimmers are still waiting for future expansion packs to expand on both, some compelling mods blend the two gameplay styles— like the Sims 4 Furry Mod by Savestate. For many, the Furry Mod is just the small wacky touch they want to liven up gameplay.

While a generations-like expansion is one of the top requests for Sims 4 in 2022, another request I often see as a content creator is for werewolves. There’s something about these cults that make a portion of the Sims 4 community insist it would get them reinvested in gameplay.

In case you didn’t know, werewolves have been a part of the Sims franchise before. They first appeared in Sims 2, where their gameplay was somewhat subdued in the Sims 2: Pets expansion pack. But they were given a spotlight in Sims 3: Supernatural.

That expansion, which brought not one, but four occults– including improved vampires, witches/wizards, fairies, werewolves, and zombies on the side– has often been brought up as a demand for Sims 4. And of the supernaturals missing still, werewolves are a top concern.

The bad news: there’s still no sign of werewolves in Sims 4– and no working mods for now. But there is the Sims 4 Furry mod, which makes your sims take on unique animal physical characteristics– adding humor and some quirkiness to your game.

To help you decide whether this Sims 4 Furry mod Save State is right for you, I’ll guide you through downloading the mod, the main features, and how to get the most out of it.

Will Sims 4 Have Supernaturals?

Sims 4: Vampires

Now while I understand that not everyone would place furries under the supernatural category, I do know many players are simply looking for ways to mix up their gameplay. There are only so many times you can run into Bella Goth and Bob Pancakes around town without wishing there was a little something different.

And crazy townie fashion aside, Sims 4 just isn’t quite as quirky as past games. With some expansions, you do have an option for some occults without mods– here’s what you can and can’t play within the supernatural realm with Sims 4 DLC.

What are All the Occult Sims in Sims 4?

If you count ghosts, you do have a single occult that comes with the base game. But all other supernaturals require either expansion, game, or stuff packs. Only a few packs come with occults, and none of the Sims 4 Kits feature any occults.

As of December 2021, there are a few occults vampires (Sims 4: Vampires); mermaids (Sims 4: Island Living); aliens (Sims 4: Get to Work);  and spellcasters (Sims 4: Realm of Magic). There are also special ghosts that you can befriend or trap in Sims 4: Paranormal Stuff

Of these, vampires are usually the highest-rated for playable occults and for good reason. Vampires have a full skill tree, special abilities, aspirations, traits, and the world of Forgotten Hollow.

In my opinion, the vampires in Sims 4 are the best of the franchise. Mermaids in Island Living are stunning and have great animations, but many feel their gameplay is watered down, with no underwater world to explore. And though there are several occults in Sims 4, there are no furies and two other notable missing supernatural creatures.

Will There Be Fairies in Sims 4?

Sims 4

As of right now, there’s no guarantee that there will be fairies in Sims 4. Fairies last appeared in the sims franchise in the Sims 3: Supernatural. In that pack, fairies had magic power, which allowed them to perform tricks such as repairing items, influencing other sims, and even forcing sims to produce gold. But as of now, there are no such creatures in Sims 4.

The closest occult in Sims 4 is the spellcasters, who can create potions and perform spells after undergoing training. Spellcasters appear in Sims 4: Realm of Magic.

While some, myself included, predicted that fairies might come to the Sims 4, and I think it’s still possible, for now, simmers will have to resort to playing as spellcasters or going back to Sims 3.

Can You Be a Werewolf in Sims 4?

Werewolves are the other occult many swimmers are hoping for. For now, the Sims 4 has cats and dogs as well as the ability to make dogs look like wolves. However, even dogs that have a wolf-like appearance don’t act any differently.

So, for now, there are no wolves or werewolves in the Sims 4. Sadly, there used to be a mod for werewolves but that is no longer available, and there’s no sign that the modder plans to bring it back.

Can You Be a Furry in Sims 4?

Sims 4

You can be a furry in the Sims 4– but there’s a catch. To be a furry, you must download a mod. No DLC packs add the ability to create a furry, and it’s not a base game feature either.

So your only option for how to get a furry is to download The Sims 4: Furry Mod. But before I dive into a quick look and review of the mod, there are a few things I want to cover about downloading mods so you can avoid a broken game

Are Sims 4 Mods Illegal?

Sims 4 mods are by no means illegal. Electronic Arts, the parent company of Maxis Studios (who produces the Sims) cannot sue or fine anyone for using mods. Just as is the case with other gaming communities, mods are completely legal to use.

The caveat here is that when you download mods, it’s still at your own risk. EA doesn’t cover any difficulties you could encounter from downloading mods. In other words, you can download mods, but EA doesn’t guarantee your gaming experience.

Are Mods Safe for Sims 4?

Mods are generally safe for Sims 4. The biggest issue most simmers run into is outdated mods. Not all mods need to be updated, but some script mods break in updates. Updates add or change code to the game, so there’s always a risk that the mod will not interact in the same way.

The best way to be safe is to download a mod that’s known and has been tested by others and add it to your game without any other mods.

By doing so, you can test if it’s working or not, and remove it if you encounter any problems without having to figure out what mods or custom content are causing your problems.

Signs of a problematic mod may include game crashing, the game not loading, excessive freezing, or other serious issues that prevent you from playing normally.

Are Mods for Sims 4 Free?

The majority of mods for Sims 4 are free. The only exception is mods that are posted on the creator’s Patreon upon release. Typically how that will work is that the mod will be available for early access for a week or two for Patreon members, then offered for free to the public after this period. As such, you don’t need to pay for mods for Sims 4.

How Do I Add Mods to Sims 4?

Script mods are a little different than CC (custom content). CC usually refers to aesthetic individuals creating sim items, while mods change or add something to gameplay or how the sims interact.

Some mods come in packages that have both aesthetic CC and script mods. To add mods or cc of any kind, you must be playing on a PC or Mac. Sadly, console players can’t install mods or cc.

To install mods, all you go need to do is download the file and drag that file into your mods folder. You’ll find your mods folder by navigating to “Electronic Arts” the “Sims 4.”

If you you don’t have a Mods folder for some reason, you can create one. Slip the file in. When you load your game the first time, you’ll need to go under your menu options and select “Enable Mods” then restart your game.

Sims 4 Furry Mod: How it Works

Sims 4 Furry Mod

The Sims 4 Furry Mod by Savestate came out a few years ago with a trailer and some hype. The new Sims 4: Furry Mod trailer alone attracted over 148,000 views and around 5.8k likes.

Some of that was due to genuine excitement and some pure curiosity. But I want to take a look at exactly what the Furry Mod is, how it works, and how to put it to work in your game.

What is the Sims 4 Furry Mod?

The Sims 4 Furry Mod by Savestate allows you to create furry sims. You’ll design your new sims’ looks using custom furry mod skins and fur, as well as animal-like add ons.

Though called a mod, it’s working more as custom content. You’re making aesthetic changes to your sims and how they appear both in Create A Sim mode and in Live Mode. It’s a pretty simple bit of custom content that adds pet fur to sims– but it won’t change their behavior or interactions with other sims.

Can You Use the Sims 4 Furry Mod on All Sims?

The main Furry Mod for Sims 4 only works on Sims from teen to elder. However, there is now a mod addon that directly complements the main Furry mod and allows kids in Sims 4 to also adopt the same aesthetic. The Furry Mod for Kids works the same way, with furry mod skins and custom fur and ear addons that mimic the original furry mod.

You simply download, install and use as you would the original Furry Mod. Without this, you cannot have furry mod leg, skin, or fur add ons for kids. Note this will not work for Sims 4 toddlers.

What Does the Furry Mod Do?

Sims 4 Furry Mod

The Furry Mod adds furry mod skins, custom fur, furry add ons to the face, a furry pattern for legs, and even tails. All versions of the Furry Mod more or less work the same way. The latest version provides canine and feline furs to customize your sim’s appearance. Dogs, cats, tigers, and fox details can all be added to your sims.

Which Version of the Sims 4 Furry Mod Should I Download?

When you navigate to Savestate’s Sims 4 Furry Mod page, you’ll notice three options. The mod has undergone a few revisions, and there are still file options to download the first two versions.

However, I always recommend downloading the newest version. Not only does this increase the likelihood that the mod will work properly in your game, but it also provides the most up-to-date features.

I recommend downloading this version, as well as the complementary Custom Fur Template, which will provide you with the full array of updated custom skins, cushion furs, and fur/ skin details.

How Do I Use the Sims 4 Furry Mod by Savestate?

After you’ve downloaded the latest version of the Sims 4: Furry Mod, slip the file into your mods folder. After you’ve ensured that you’ve enabled mods in-game, navigate to Create A Sim mode. You can easily find the new additions by filtering for custom content on each category.

You’ll apply all the new furry details the same way you would any CAS details by clicking the icons on CAS to apply them to your sim. The eyes can be adjusted as can regular eyes, but there’s less you can do to adjust other fur details.

To fully see all your options, I recommend checking out all of the following categories in this order:

Step One: Add Furry Mod Eyes and Eye Details

Sims 4 Furry Mod

Click on your sim’s eyes. To become a full furry, you’ll want to add some custom eyes. These eyes are large and cartoony. While they mimic the Maxis Match (regular sims style) they’re more exaggerated and work with the other furry details. Eye details are also included, such as eyelids.

Step Two: Add Furry Face Details

The face is a must, and those details can be accessed by clicking on your sims’ forehead or cheeks. Here, you’ll see many options for feline and canine details. Many will apply to the full face and complement the furry mod eyes.

Make sure you also pay attention to eyelid details. This is the skin details section of CAS– where you’ll find the majority of the furry mod custom skins and addons.

Step Three: Add Ears

Sims 4 Furry Mod

Under skin details, you’ll have your option of ears as well. Some are upright and some are folded, and some are feline and some are more canine. You can go for a seamless look and match or mix and match for a wacky take. Make sure to check swatches on all of the ears.

Step Four: Add a Tail

What’s a good furry makeover without a tail? You’ll see the tail in the skin details section. It can be a little tricky, as some clothing clips with the tails. You’ll need to do a little trial and error to see what sims clothes work with the tail and won’t don’t. This can be a little frustrating, but many of the items do work for the furry mod tails.

Step Five: Add Body Fur/ Details

Make sure you don’t forget to add custom furs and custom skins from the Furry Mod all over. That includes the chest as well as furry details for the legs and arms. Once again, the custom content can be matched or mixed and matched- and you should always check all swatches that are available under the skin details. Also, make sure you don’t forget the feet.

Step Six: Add Additional Details and Add Ons

Now, navigate to the tattoos section under the skin details tab. It’s here that you can show off your creativity, with specialty stripes and patterns. Get creative and don’t be afraid to experiment a little. I think this section adds a lot of character and dimension to the furry mod skins and custom furs.

Step Seven: Finish Creating Your Sim

Sims 4 Furry Mod

Now that you’ve applied all the new furry skin details, it’s time to finish creating your sim just as you normally would. Happily, some hair– though not all– will work with the new furry skin details.

Select some traits, your desired aspiration, and don’t forget to add some likes and dislikes. You should also play with their walk style and pitch/ voice to see if you can find a combo that fits their furry look.

Also, note that skin details don’t carry over to every outfit. So, if you want your sim to always appear as a furry, you must add those skin details to every look!

Step Eight: Test and Enjoy!

Once you’re done creating your sim, now it’s time to experience Savestate’s Furry Mod in your game. If you have any glitches with clothing, swap it out. And remember you can always click the edit household option from the neighborhood map or have your sim look in a mirror to tweak their appearance as needed.

Frequently Asked Question

Question: What Does Wolfsbane Do in Sims 4?

Answer: If you own the Sims 4: Vampires game pack, you have the option to craft the Wolfsbane potion. Wolfsbane is meant to be protective for vampires, as opposed to other sims.

This potion provides a power reset and is protective against other vampiric powers used against you. In the game, Wolfsbane seeds can be ordered from your computer or phone once you reach an adequate power level as a vampire.

Question: Are Paranormal Stuff Packs Worth It?

Answer: The Sims 4: Paranormal Stuff was the only stuff pack to come out in 2021, and quite possibly the most generous of all stuff packs when you combine CAS, BB, and gameplay.

The Paranormal Stuff Pack comes with a paranormal investigator freelance career, the iconic Bonehilda/ skeleton maid, seances, haunted houses, a crystal ball, two NPC ghosts, and countless items based upon New Orleans. If you love that type of gameplay and aesthetic, I think it’s well worth the price.

Question: Can Sims Marry Bonehilda?

Answer: If you do buy the Paranormal Stuff Pack for Sims 4, you can have a romance with Bonehilda. Summon her and build up a relationship, just as you would with another sim.

Bonehilda is woohooed with, but, without cheats, you can’t marry her or try for a baby. To do so you’d have to cheat to add her to the household. If you do so, you’ll discover that Bonehilda is really the illusion of a skeleton– when she bathes, she’s a regular sim.

Final Thoughts

The Sims 4: Furry Mod probably won’t dramatically change your gameplay, but then, it doesn’t have to. While the mod doesn’t technically add new gameplay, it can switch up how you play and enhance your creativity. It’s a good sign it’s been updated a few times.

Know that if you already have other script mods in your game, there’s always a chance for mod conflict. Add one mod at a time and test it to make sure it’s working properly. And If you do decide to download The Sims 4: Furry Mod, make sure you look through all the possible swatches to make the most out of it.

Where to Download: You can download the Savestate Furry Mod here. Make sure to download the latest version, as well as the Custom Fur template, if you want even more options to make your furs.

Final Buying Recommendations

While there is not a specific pack that complements the Furry Mod, there are a few supernatural or occult-based that you may be interested in. While you can get aliens in Get to Work or mermaids in Island Living, many find both occult a little weaker and usually use mods to enhance these magical creatures.

For targeted packs, I recommend Sims 4: Realm of Magic, a game pack dedicated to spellcasters, and especially the Sims 4: Vampires game pack, which adds dimension to the occult. If you’re looking for a small addition, The Sims 4: Paranormal Stuff is a fantastic value for the price.
